Con Edison Manhattan Power Outage

7/26/2019

Earlier this month, the heart of Manhattan was struck with a major power outage estimated to have impacted up to 72,000 Con Edison customers. While dangerous and definitely hard to look on the bright side of things, there are reports that do bring good news concerning the power outage. NBC reports that terrorism and cyber-attacks were ruled out following an investigation ordered by Mayor Bill De Blasio. So what could have caused this major blackout?

On top of our mystery, throughout the past week as many as 63,000 within different boroughs of New York City experienced scattered outages due to record usage of power during a heat wave, and then again during a rainstorm. As of Tuesday the 23rd, about 3,500 were still without power according to the Wall Street Journal. With the scattered outages and blackouts due to heat and flooding, can we assume weather is also to blame for the preliminary blackout as well?

Additionally, what does all of this mean? These power outages not only cause a disturbance in everyday life, but cost a fortune for small companies and no small cost for moderately sized businesses either. Furthermore, with all of these power outages, can you really be sure you're completely safe from cyber attacks or other breaches? If another occurs, how do you know it will be the weather again, and what does it mean for you? Potential lost of income, data, business, safety, and more to come if Con Edison is unable to find the source for all of these blackouts.

And what will happen to Con Edison? Last time they experienced power failures like this was in 2006 and as a result were fined $18 million due to outages throughout Queens, New York. One thing is for certain; while you can't be completely secure if your power keeps going out, your data can be protected. Inquire about ExactData and our services to find out more.
